My supervisor experience

I have extensive experience of supervising CBT Therapists, EMDR Therapists, Counsellors, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Nurses, Social Workers and other caring professionals in the NHS, private and voluntary sectors.

I am experienced in working with supervisees from trainees to advanced level practitioners. I have successfully supported a number of supervisees through the BACP and BABCP accreditation process; and provided consultative support for colleagues who are also pursuing accreditation with these professional bodies.

I am an experienced supervisor of individuals and small groups and can also offer telephone supervision.

I am experienced in providing assessments and constructive feedback of video recordings; and trained in the use of the CTS-R for CBT Therapists.

Qualifications in clinical supervision

I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling Supervision from York St John University, where I studied a range of supervision models including integrative, CBT and humanistic. In addition, I have received NHS Training in CBT Supervision from Newcastle CBT Centre, which focussed on their ‘CBT Cake Stand’ model of supervision.

I am also an Accredited EMDT Consultant and Supervisor with many years of experience in supervising EMDR Therapists from public and private sector.

How I work

I would describe my supervision approach as integrative because I can draw upon a range of therapeutic approaches and tailor them to the supervisees way of working or developmental stage. My goal is to provide the most beneficial balance of support and challenge for supervisees in order to provide a safe, reflective environment in which they can explore their work and gain a wider perspective on what occurs within the therapy and supervision space.

I am aware of the potential difficulties and the imbalance of the power supervision can bring. I work towards keeping this balance as even as possible, bearing in mind developmental stages, varying needs and therapeutic approaches. My aim is to empower supervisees to be able to work with their clients to their full potential and satisfaction.

I see supervision as somewhere difficulties can be explored, but also to acknowledge the work you are proud of as I believe it is important this does not get lost. I am keen to understand the needs and goals of each supervisee for example; what are their hopes and fears around supervision, what they are interested in, areas for further development and former experiences. I understand how isolating or stressful working as a therapist or a caring professional can be. A supportive and trusting relationship is therefore paramount.

Supervision can also provide a restorative function whilst keeping the clients best interests in mind at all times. I would therefore not expect my supervisees to leave their personal selves completely outside of the therapy room or broader organisational issues which could impact upon their work with clients.

Thank you for all the time and effort you have put in to being my supervisor and believing in me when I lacked confidence in my abilities. I really feel I am taking a lot away from working with you.

Working with a supervisor who has an excellent kowledge in several approaches has given me alternative perspectives and techniques to work with clients when I feel stuck.

Julie has supported me to develop my CBT skills and experience but equally challenged me with constructive feedback which helped me to improve my knowledge, skills and confidence.
